Pupil Absence

Absence due to illness

Can I please remind all parents and carers that if your child is absent from School due to illness you should telephone or email the office before 10am on the first day with a reason for absence.

Absence due to circumstances other than illness

I am sure you will be aware of the recent changes in Government Legislation regarding Pupil Leave of Absence. The 2013 Amendments to the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 explain clearly that Headteachers may not grant leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Headteachers should also determine the number of school days a child can be away from school if leave is granted. It is possible that in some cases of unauthorised absence, Penalty Notices may be issued.

Due to the particular needs of our children, it is likely – but not to be expected – that I will authorise pupil absences for family holidays. However, to conform with Government requirements, I need to be satisfied that the child’s attendance during the school year is satisfactory before leave is granted.

If you wish to apply for authorised absence for your child for any reason and for any duration, please contact the office who will issue you with a form to complete and return for authorisation. A copy of he Leave of Absence Form can be downloaded using the link below. The request should be made at least two weeks prior to the date of absence.

More information regarding the new Legislation and how it may affect you can be found on the Northumberland County Council website www.northumberland.gov.uk
