Welcome to Barndale House School

 Welcome from our Headteacher

"What I learn today, prepares me for tomorrow"

On behalf of the pupils, staff and governors I would like to welcome you to Barndale House School. I hope that this website gives you a glimpse into the life of our school and begins to help you understand ‘The Barndale Way’ of doing things. We are very proud of what our wonderful school can offer your child and family and our website is a good place to find out exactly what you can expect from us.

I feel very privileged to be introducing myself as the Headteacher of Barndale House School. I have worked in special education for over ten years and to be the Headteacher of such a fantastic, friendly and welcoming school is a job I feel very fortunate to have. The positive, warm atmosphere and commitment from staff to providing the best possible education, opportunities and outcomes for all of our amazing pupils is something that excites me very much. It makes Barndale House School a very special place to work.

I hope that you find this website useful, but if there is anything else you need to know then please contact us. We love our school and we hope that you will too!

I look forward to meeting and working with you.

Mark Phillips
Headteacher

 Residential Information

Barndale is the only school in Northumberland with a residential provision. This is used both by the School and Children's Services.

School Residential Provision - the building is used Mon-Fri as part of the curriculum extension. Pupils are supported in moving towards adulthood through the 24hr curriculum and accreditation that is offered as part of this.

Short Break Service- the building is used from Friday night to Monday morning. The Short Break Service is run by Children's Services and is completely independent from the school. It offers families throughout Northumberland respite care and support for children with additional needs.  There is a link to their section on our website under Information - Short Break Service Residential.
 Prospective Parents/Carers/Families

We know that the decision to move your child to a specialist provision can be really difficult. We hope that our website gives you enough information so that you want to visit us and see what we do.

Barndale is still fortunate to be a relatively small specialist school which means we benefit from the following:

  • Small class sizes - max 12 pupils
  • A family feel - pupils love their school and are proud of their learning and achievements
  • We are an all age school so your child is supported from their starting point to adulthood
  • Diversity and inclusivity in all classes
  • An intervention team consisting of SaLT, OT, VI, AI, Physio
  • Experienced and enthusiastic staff
  • A residential provision that pupils age 7 and upwards can access
  • Two sites within Alnwick town centre

Historically, Barndale catered for pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. This has changed significantly over the last few years and a large cohort of our pupils are on the autistic spectrum (ASD), ADHD, communication & visual impairments, cognition needs, and social & emotional difficulties. Our staff training has adapted with the needs of our pupils.

It may be that you are at the point of starting the EHCP process or are considering a change of placement. Please visit the 'About us' section to find out more about the school and what our curriculum looks like.

Please get in contact if we can help in anyway - telephone us on 01665 602541 or email admin@barndalehouse.northumberland.sch.uk.
